The cipher was developed by the Briton Sir Francis Beaufort (* 1774; † 1857). He is also known for his development of the Beaufort scale, which is used to measure the wind force.
The Beaufort cipher works almost identical to the Vigenère cipher, but the sequence of the used alphabets is reversed:

Since only the order of characters in the alphabets has been changed, the security of this cipher is identical to that of the Vigenère cipher.
